Double Sided Tape Buying Guide
What Makes Foam Tape Different from Flat Tape?
Double sided foam tape has a sponge-like core between two adhesive layers. This gives it three advantages over flat double sided tape: it conforms to uneven or textured surfaces, it absorbs vibrations and small impacts, and it creates a small gap between surfaces that can hide imperfections. This makes foam tape the go-to choice for automotive and outdoor applications where surfaces are rarely perfectly flat.
How to Get the Strongest Bond
Surface preparation is the single biggest factor in how well tape holds. Follow these steps for a lasting bond:
- Clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or a degreaser — fingerprints and dust dramatically reduce adhesion
- Ensure surfaces are completely dry before applying
- Apply tape at room temperature (above 10°C) for best initial tack
- Press firmly along the entire length of the tape for at least 30 seconds
- Allow 24 hours before applying stress or load for full bond strength
Temperature and Weather Resistance
Foam adhesive tape performs well across typical UK temperatures. Once fully bonded (after 24 hours), it withstands rain, frost, and direct sunlight. For extreme heat applications such as engine bay work, specialist high-temperature tape may be more suitable. For most exterior automotive use including number plates, body mouldings, and trim, standard foam tape provides reliable long-term adhesion.
Foam Tape vs Adhesive Pads
Pre-cut adhesive pads offer convenience for small, specific jobs like mounting dashcams or hooks. However, tape rolls offer much better value per square centimetre and can be cut to any length or shape needed. For any job requiring more than a few small mounts, a roll of double sided tape is the more economical and versatile choice.
Removing Double Sided Foam Tape
To remove foam tape cleanly, warm it gently with a hair dryer for 30–60 seconds to soften the adhesive. Then peel slowly at a low angle. Any remaining adhesive residue can be removed with isopropyl alcohol, WD-40, or a dedicated adhesive remover. Avoid using sharp blades on painted surfaces.
